Did somebody ever say just one word and it reminded you of a story? How about the word ‘camel’? You don’t care? Too bad, it just happened to me.
I work with this guy who takes exotic vacations all over the world. He’s way past Europe, he’s been to Thailand, 3 weeks in China, the grand art-history tour of Italy, Caribbean culinary-yacht cruise, you get the idea. He’s not married, spends all his money on stereo equipment and these trips instead of tuition or alimony.
A N Y W A Y S . . . . one year he went to Egypt. Pyramids, Aswan Dam, Nile River cruise, etc. The high point was when their native guide took them to this little out-of-the-way non-tourista restaurant which specialized in serving camel. Apparently this is a great delicacy in Egypt. The piece de resistance is a whole camel’s head on a platter. They bring it to your table and pop off the sterling silver cover — VOILA!! I don’t know if it’s on fire or not. For a slight additional fee, you can get someone to carve the choicest bits out of the nose for you.
So they get in the jeeps and drive for hours out in the desert to this place, miles off the road. It’s pitch dark and they have no idea where they’re going until they see the dim lights of the restaurant on the horizon. And as they pull up out of the gloom into the circle of light, they see a group of worn-out looking camels tied out back. WITH BIG RED ‘X’-ES PAINTED ON THEIR SIDES! Like some combination used car lot / lumbermill / slaughterhouse!
I think I would have just ordered dessert.
